History

Tucked away from the bustle of Central New Delhi, on the busy Outer Ring Road, in West Delhi stands the CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF GRACES as a “Land Mark” to all commuters using the Flyover between Vikaspuri and Meera Bagh, with the Out Stretched hands of JESUS CHRIST’s statue (Christ the Redeemer), like the one at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Church's centralized plan blends neatly with Sir Edwin Lutyens city plan. The Church, is a witness to all the followers of Christ, is a sanctuary of quiet meditation, prayer and generous giving. It is home to a vibrant Parish and a wonderful tribute to the Christians of Vikaspuri.

Initially Vikaspuri was part of St. Paul’s Church Parish in Delhi Cantonment along with other colonies like Hari Nagar, Tilak Nagar, Uttam Nagar and Mayapuri. It was found that a reasonable number of Catholics stayed in Vikaspuri. Hence a new parish was created in the year 1985. Rev. Fr. Augustine Kuriapally was appointed as the first Parish Priest of Vikaspuri.

Due to the fact that as there was no church in the area, Mr. Denzil D’Souza offered his house No. 159-A in GG-1 Block of Vikaspuri to conduct Holy Mass on Sundays. The offering of Sunday Holy Mass started in November 1985. During this time there were around 100 plus families living in the area. The parishioners were a combination of English, Hindi and Malayam speaking. As the parish started growing and in order to reach all the faithful, Rev. Fr. Augustine started regular evening Holy Mass on Saturdays: 1st in P.M. Apartments, Vikaspuri in the house of Mr. A.B. George @ 6.00 pm, followed by 2nd Holy Mass @ 7.30 pm in Nightingale Apartments, Vikaspuri.

In March 1986, the Mass Centre in GG-1 Block was shifted from House No. 159-A to House No. 70-C of Mr. Alexander in the same block. It is from here a full-fledged Parish started functioning. The Vincent de Paul Society, the youth group and the choir group also came up. All church related activities were held here for about 8 years, numerous baptisms and one marriage was also solemnized here. Holy Week programs, Christmas mid-night Holy Mass etc. were organized in the park facing the Mass Centre.

In March 1986 the Archdiocese of Delhi acquired 500 Sq. yards of land in Vikaspuri. The Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Augustine along with his assistant Fr. Norbert Louis faced a horrible task of getting the land vacated allotted by DDA to the church as the same was occupied by around 30 plus families who had constructed small huts. Due to the fact that the occupants of the church land were all employed in the same vicinity as domestic helps were unwilling to move from the land. The elders in the parish, along with youth groups, assisted by Parish Priest Fr. Augustine, approached the SHO of Vikaspuri area for help. The SHO was kind enough to provide police force to help shift the habitants to the re-settlement colony a few miles away as instructed by DDA. Trucks were arranged by the church to shift them along with their goods. Even after shifting the occupants from the church land, as a precautionary measure groups of 8-10 parishioners slept at the church site for a week or so, to prevent them from reentering the site again.

The church was built with the help of parishioners through personal contributions, help from other Parishes, the Archdiocese of Delhi and a benefactor had donated a large amount for this project.

There was great festivity on the Foundation Stone laying day on 22nd April 1990 by His Grace Angelo Fernandez, Archbishop of Delhi. After the solemn Mass at the Mass Centre in Vikaspuri, the congregation went in a procession to the site where the church was to be built for laying the Foundation Stone. The liturgies were prepared by parish groups of young people and children who sang the hymns and composed special prayers.

It took around 3 years for the church to come up. The Late Archbishop Alan de Lastic blessed and open the church facing the Outer Ring Road for the devotees in the name of CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF GRACES on 21st February 1993. Today in a span of 25 years, the church attracts huge crowds from all faiths. The Catholic population has increased many folds as the boundaries of Vikaspuri Parish has extended to Vikaspuri Extension, Paschim Vihar, Tilak Nagar, Tilak Vihar, Harijan Colony, Ganesh Nagar, Krishna Park Extension, Old Mahavir Nagar, Hastal, Uttam Nagar, Mohan Garden, Jeevan Park, Vikas Nagar and the adjoining colonies.

The Church of Our Lady of Graces devotee’s strength reduced with the coming up of two new parishes: St. Thomas Malankara Church in Uttam Nagar and St. Ephraem Malabar Church at Krishna Park, after the Archdiocese of Delhi Synod in 2002. In spite of all the happenings, the Church of Our Lady of Graces has to its credit around 800 plus families.

In order to have a well-built networking within the Christian communities, collecting Church Support Funds and for arrangements of Small Christian Community meetings – sharing and understanding the Word of God from the Holy Bible; the entire Parish has been divided into 18 Wards; each with a name and a ward representative duly elected by the area concerned members.

The Church of Our Lady of Graces Parish, has the privilege of having in its jurisdiction a few religious houses: Sisters of St. Ann’s of Providence in Vikaspuri, Sisters of St. Ann’s of Charity in Uttam Nagar, and Sisters from Jesus & Mary and Joseph Congregation – Paschim Vihar. The Parish also has a “Destitute Home” in Bodella Village of Vikaspuri.

The Church of Our Lady of Graces has elected and nominated Parish Council Members. It also has Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Kartavya Society, Finance Committee, Women’s Council, Sunday Catechism class teachers group, Alter servers group, Parish monthly bulletin “Vikas Vani” Editorial Board and The Parish Youth Group.
